The university’s first synthetic rugby pitch, which will also be used for football and lacrosse, is a technically superior surface manufactured by SIS at their factory in Cumbria.
The full-sized IRB-specification rugby pitch took 11 weeks to complete and involved removing an existing grassed area (used for marquees during graduations) plus two netball courts. Three new hard surface tennis courts (with netball markings) were constructed by SIS at the top of the site.
After removing the soil from the site and installing a full drainage system, the SIS team built up the sub base with 250-300mm of stone.
A 20mm blinding layer was then covered with a Schmitz shock pad before the SIS Scrummager 65 surface (manufactured from XP Pro Yarn from Tencate) was installed.
Placed at the base of the fibres was 2EW sand from Garside, then topped with a rubber granule infill.
Project manager Phil Blackwell said: “This was a very prestigious job at one of the most impressive universities in the country. The whole project was handled with the utmost attention to detail to meet IRB (International Rugby Board) specifications.”
SIS chief executive officer George Mullan said: “Nottingham University has invested heavily in sport and we were delighted to be working with them.
“They now have the highest quality synthetic rugby surface to add to their superb sporting facilities.”
A major European football club is planning to use the new pitch for training next summer.
