07 December 2017

Former Manchester United FC defender Denis Irwin joined The President of The Football Foundation to officially open Manchester Health Academy's new all-weather pitch. The project was made possible by a £386,583 grant from The Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by The Football Foundation.

The grant has enabled Manchester Health Academy to install a new state-of-the-art third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP). Limonta Smith JV Ltd, as part of the 'FA Facilities Fund' framework were procured to construct the new full size artificial grass pitch and two multi-use games areas (MUGAs). The whole project began in May, the ground excavation process began, and then laser controlled machinery were used to prepare the ground for the pitch base construction. The pitches have been completed with the installation of fencing and floodlighting, which mean they can be used all-year-round.

As part of the contract Smith Maintenance has provided specialist maintenance regimes to work alongside the school's in-house team to ensure the pitch is kept in tip-top condition. Weekly maintenance has been advised using a mechanical brush to help ensure the rubber crumb infill is relatively distributed, the artificial grass is in a well-groomed and in an upright manor. Smith Maintenance will also provide the specialist, annual maintenance and complete the FA Testing.

Kevin Green, Principal of the Academy, spoke at the official open day; "I wish to thank Denis Irwin for coming along and making this event so memorable for our student and the pupils who joined us from our Partnership Primary Schools. This brilliant new facility has been developed with the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, and will make a huge impact on grassroots sports locally, providing a top quality venue for more than a thousand local sports players each weeks."
