Blakedown Win Contract with Wakefield Hockey Club

Blakedown Sport and Play Ltd is currently constructing a full-size hockey pitch for Wakefield Hockey Club. The chosen surface is a nylon, water-based carpet, manufactured by Holland-based Edel Grass BV.

Blakedown say that "this fantastic new ground will possess all the characteristics for international play with global specification."

Alongside the main pitch Blakedown are also installing a 30m x 18m warm up area, which mirrors the full size pitch with fencing and floodlighting. Work started on the site in August and completion is expected shortly, despite the difficult weather conditions recently experienced.

Wakefield Hockey Club received a £900,000 Lottery Grant from Sport England, following its promotion to the National League. This grant is funding the construction of both the new pitch and new changing facilities for the Club.

The chosen knitted carpet from Edel was first introduced in the late sixties and has been brought up-to-date with several performance enhancing improvements, making it one of the most popular water-based surfaces offered by Blakedown Sport and Play.

Blakedown state that "the artificial grass is suitable for use all year round, having a very efficient playing surface with good water balance and a reduction in injury risk."

Our picture shows a similar water-based pitch installed by Blakedown last year at Furzefield Sports Centre.

Blakedown Sport and Play Ltd will be one of 50 exhibitors at SAPCA's "Sports Facility Construction" event at Sandown Park Racecourse on Tuesday 26 November 2002.
