Michael Abbott Associates was founded by in 1980 by Mike Abbott, a Chartered Civil Engineer with experience in road, bridge and tunnel design and construction. Mike moved into the specialist sports surfacing sector, initially as a contractor, in the mid 1970s.

A former Chairman of the Tennis Court Constructors Federation and the Industry Training Organisation Mike was Technical Chairman of SAPCA for ten years, in which capacity he served on the BSI committee which developed the European (CEN) Standard for synthetic sports surfaces.

Kenny Abbott, son of Mike, joined the practice in January 2008 having had a wide experience in the leisure sector constructing tennis courts, tracks and pitches throughout the UK. Kenny has a B.Sc. In Building Engineering and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building. Kenny has an extensive background in project management and the Quality Control Standards.

From a base in North Berwick, near Edinburgh this practice covers the UK and Ireland carrying out feasibility studies and working as project managers, specifiers, designers, etc. Several Universities in the UK have used the expertise of the practice on research and development into sports surfacing related topics.
